how the tools work

Every tool runs entirely in the browser, locally, on your machine. Files are read from your drive — they are not uploaded, not queued on a server, and not seen by anyone on the internet. That is also why the tools work with the network off once the page has loaded, and why large files are limited by the machine rather than by an upload.

It has a practical consequence worth knowing: a long export uses the processor and memory of the device it runs on. A four-minute video keyed and encoded with an alpha channel will take a while on a laptop, and the tab has to stay open while it does.

why they are free

They are all tools I made myself because I needed them at one point or another, and the hosting cost of a static site is small. There is no paid tier, no trial, no watermark and no feature held back. Each tool has a donate button that opens Stripe Checkout; that is the whole business model and it is entirely optional. In a world of subscriptions, this site should remain a little island of sanity.
